The traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through generations by word of mouth

Fable Characteristics:

  • Animals with human qualities (talking)

  • Teaches a moral

  • Very short stories

  • Examples: The Tortoise and The Hare

Tall Tale Characteristics

  • Human characters with supernatural strength

  • Characters are usually brave and hard working

  • Exaggerated events (almost impossible)

  • Example: Paul Bunyon
