​Folklore

​

The traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through generations by word of mouth

Fable Characteristics:

• Animals with human qualities (talking)

• Teaches a moral

• Very short stories

• Examples: The Tortoise and The Hare

Tall Tale Characteristics

• Human characters with supernatural strength

• Characters are usually brave and hard working

• Exaggerated events (almost impossible)

• Example: Paul Bunyon

Fairytale Characteristics

• Make believe (could never really happen)

• Has magic

• "Once upon a time" or " Long ago"

• Happy Endings

• Evil characters

Legend Characteristics

• Based on real characters and historic events

• Exaggerated events

• Example: The Legend of John Henry

Myth Characteristics

• explains natural events (seasons, human life, the beginning of evil)

• Gods and Goddesses

• Are believed to be true in certain groups

• Example: Adam and Eve
