Before the year 1820, Maine was part of the state of Massachusetts. It was known as the District of Maine. The State of New Hampshire separated the District of Maine from Massachusetts. Many people living in Maine believed the government of Massachusetts treated Maine poorly.

Maine's population ballooned from 91,000 in 1791 to nearly 300,000 in 1820.
