Nervous System

  • the human nervous system is made up of organs and tissues like any system

  • a cell that carries information thorugh nervous system is called a neuron

  • neurons are made up of dendrites and axons

3

Nervous system

  • divided up into two systems

  • Central nervous system and the peripheral system.

4

Central Nervous system

  • made up of brain and spinal cord

  • job of CNS is to control most of the functions of the body and mind.

5

Peripheral nervous system

  • network of nerves that branches out from teh Central nervous system and connects to the rest of the body.

6

Neurons-made up of three kinds of neurons

  • sensory neurons-picks up a stimulus from the internal or external environment and converts the stimulus into a message

  • Interneuron carries the message from one neuron to another

  • motor neuron sends the message to a muscle or gland, which reacts accordingly

7

Function of a neuron

  • function is to transmit information

  • the message carried by the neuron is called a nerve impulse

8

Synapse

  • the junction where one neuron can transfer an impulse to another neuron

  • at the axon tips, electrical signals change to chemical signals.

9

Parts of the nervous system

  • Central nervous system

  • Peripheral Nervous system

10

Central Nervous system

  • Brain (located in the skull)

  • spinal cord (thick column of nervous tissue that links the brain to most of the nerves that branch out through the body

11

Peripheral Nervous system

  • Somatic: controls voluntary actions (texting, throwing, etc. )

  • Autonomic : involuntary actions (digestion, pupil dilation, etc)

12

Reflexes

  • Involuntary reactions of jumping is a reflex

  • Automatic response that occurs without conscience control.

  • Pain can trigger a reflex arc

13

Endocrine System

  • endocrine system, along with the nervous system helps the body maintain homeostasis.

  • Nervous systems sends nerve impulses through the body

  • endocrine system regulates the body by releasing chemicals called hormones.

14

Hypothalamus

  • links the nervous system and the endocrine system.

  • gland located deep inside the brain, just above the spinal cord.

  • function is to send out nerve and chemical signals.
