FUTURE SIMPLE

FORM: subject+ will+ bare infinitive

USE

  • We use the future simple to make predictions for the future.

  • To make promises, request something or offer our help.

  • To make threats and to give warnings

  • With expressions like: I think, I believe, I suppose, I expect..., be sure, be afraid....and with adverbs like probably, certainly, perhaps e.t.c.

  • EXAMPLES

  • They will travel to Italy next week.

  • Stop talking or I will send you to the principal's office!

BE GOING TO

  • We use be going to to make predictions based on facts

  • to talk about personal plans for the future

  • intentions

  • EXAMPLES

  • They are going to go to the theatre tommorow.

  • Julia is going to move to Ireland next month.She has found a new job there.

  • Look at the dark clouds! It is going to rain!

FUTURE CONTINUOUS

FORM: subject + will be+ verb in -ing form

USE

  • We use future continuous to talk about an action that will be in progress at a specific time in the future.

  • To ask someone for their plans and intentions politely

  • EXAMPLES

  • They will be travelling to New Zealand this time next week.

  • Will you be going to the supermarket, Miriam?

FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE

FORM: Subject +will have+past participle/ -ed

USE

  • We use Future Perfect Simple to talk about an action that will have been completed before a specific time/ before another action, in the future.

  • EXAMPLES

  • We will have finished cleaning the house by 6 o'clock.

  • Mum will have prepared lunch, before we return home from football practise.

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS

FORM: subject+will have been + verb in -ing ending.

USE

  • We use Future Perfect Continuous to emphasize the duration of an action until a specific time in the future.

  • EXAMPLES

  • Mark will have been working in the garden for 3 hours by 5 o'clock.

  • By the time we reach Thessaloniki, we will have been driving for 5 hours.
