Nile River is in Egypt
The River Nile is about 4,160 miles in length and is the longest river in Africa and in the world. Although it is generally associated with Egypt, only 22% of the Nile’s course runs through Egypt.
In Egypt, the River Nile creates a fertile green valley across the desert. It was by the banks of the river that one of the oldest civilizations in the world began. The ancient Egyptians lived and farmed along the Nile, using the soil to produce food for themselves and their animals.

Why Did the Ancient Egyptians Settle Around the Nile?
The first settlements in the Nile Valley began around 7,000 years ago. Hunters and gatherers moved to the Nile Valley from less fertile areas in Africa and southwest Asia. As in other parts of the world, these settlements gradually developed into more and more complex societies. Most Egyptians lived near the Nile as it provided water, food, transportation and excellent, fertile soil for growing food. Ancient Egypt could not have existed without the river Nile. Since rainfall is almost non-existent in Egypt, the floods provided the only source of moisture to sustain crops.

Characteristics and Geographical Features of the Nile River
The Nile river flows north from the heart of Africa to the Mediterranean Sea. The only other river to flow north is the Genessee River in the United States. It begins as 2 separate rivers, the Blue Nile and the White Nile. The Nile river is filled with narrow cliffs, boulders, and wild rapids. It runs through a narrow, green valley of Egypt and then branches out over an area of fertile soil at the Meditteranean Sea (the Nile River Delta).West of the Nile is the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world. East of the Nile is the Eastern Desert.

Nile Provided Protection
In ancient times, the Nile protected Egypt from outside armies. The cataracts blocked enemy boats from reaching Egypt since large ships could only travel the last 650 miles. The delta marshes offered no harbors for invaders. The deserts also kept armies away because of the heat.

Nile River Flooding
In ancient times, the people of Egypt depended on the flooding of the Nile for survival. The annual flood allowed them to farm and live securely. The River Nile flooded every year between July and October, in a season the Egyptians called akhet (the inundation). Melting snow and heavy summer rain in the Ethiopian Mountains sent a torrent of water causing the banks of the River Nile in Egypt to overflow on the flat desert land. When the water went down, dark fertile mudd (Kemet) remained.

The Nile Crocodile is the largest crocodile in Africa, and also one of the largest in the world. It can be as long as 20 feet, and can weigh up to 1,500 pounds. It eats animals that come to the water to drink. There are also soft-shelled turtles, lizards and 15 species of venomous snakes that live in the Nile River habitat. The hippopotamus also lives along the Nile River.
