Making Comparison - Comparatives

  • We use adj + er than and more + adj + than to compare one thing with another.

  • For short adjectives, we use adj + er than

  • For long adjectives we use more + adj + than

  • For words (adj.) that end in a consonant and –y,: we change the y to i and add -er

  • Words that end in a consonant-vowel-consonant combination: Double the final consonant and then add er

  • If a word ends in –e, we add –r

  • The adjectives goodbad and far have irregular comparatives.
