4

Reviewing the Methods of solving

Use the next few slides to practice and remember which method is the BEST to use and why. (HINT: Write this down so you have a copy of this for your quiz!)

5

Taking the Square Roots

(ax+c)2=0

ax2+c =0

  • Missing "b" or "x" term

  • Doesn't have to =0

  • Get x2 or the binomial squares by itself before taking the square root.

  • Don't forget the +/-

6

Multiple Choice

Question image

Solve the equation using the square root method. Simplify!

1

78\frac{7}{8}

2

±78\pm\frac{7}{8}

3

±4964\pm\sqrt{\frac{49}{64}}

4

4964\frac{49}{64}

7

Completing the Square

ax2+bx+c=0

  • The "b" or "x" term is even

  • Starts with x2 or has a GCF

  • Doesn't need to =0

  • After factoring, Set both factors =0 and SOLVE for x.

8

Multiple Choice

Solve by completing the square:

 x2+10x=9x^2+10x=-9

1

x = 1 and -12

2

x = 1 and -9

3

x = -1 and -9

4

x = 1 and -1

9

Factoring

ax2+bx+c=0

  • Must be in standard form and =0

  • If missing "c" term the use GCF Factor (Pull out the biggest number the terms share)

  • After factoring, Set both factors =0 and Solve for x.

10

Multiple Choice

Solve the equation by factoring.

 5x214x245x^2-14x-24

1

 x=4 and 65x=4\ and\ \frac{6}{5}

2

 x= 4 and 65x=\ 4\ and\ -\frac{6}{5}

3

 x= 4 and 65x=\ -4\ and\ \frac{6}{5}

4

 x = 4 and 65x\ =\ -4\ and\ -\frac{6}{5}

11

Quadratic Formula

  • Must be in standard form and =0

  • Use when equation is not factorable

  • ALL QUADRATICS CAN BE SOLVED WITH THE QUADRATIC FORMULA!

12

Multiple Choice

Solve the equation using the quadratic formula.

 10k26k+6=0-10k^2-6k+6=0

1

 x=3±6910x=\frac{-3\pm\sqrt{69}}{10}

2

 x=6±26920x=\frac{6\pm2\sqrt{69}}{-20}

3

 x=3±5110x=\frac{-3\pm\sqrt{51}}{10}

4

 x=6±25120x=\frac{6\pm2\sqrt{51}}{-20}

Poll

How do you feel now after reviewing?

Great, I'm ready!

Not ready... yet (I'd recommend you go to after school tutoring with Mr. McMillan)
