2
Convection Currents
Magma in the mantle heats up, becomes less dense (lighter) and rises. It pushes the Earth's plates, cools, and sinks back down. This process occurs again and again.
3
HR Diagram
The HR Diagram classifies stars. As you go up the Y axis, the stars get brighter. As you move along the X axis, stars get cooler as you move from left to right. Observe the diagram.
4
Multiple Choice
Which group is the dimmest (not bright)?
Giants
Super giants
main sequence
white dwarfs
5
Continental Drift Theory by Alfred Wegener
Wegener had evidence that pangaea existed but couldn't explain why the continents were moving!
6
Plate Boundaries
Convergent = folded mountains, deep ocean trenches and volcanoes
Divergent = mid ocean ridges (volcanoes) and rift valleys
Transform = Fault lines
7
Topographic Maps
Contour lines show elevation above sea level. To find the difference in elevation you must find the elevation at each point and subtract the two.
8
Multiple Choice
Observe the image. What is the difference in elevation between the 2 points?
160
40
250
200
9
Seasons
To determine seasons for the hemispheres, just look at the direction the axis is tilted. If it is tilted towards the Sun, it will have summer. If tilted away, it will be winter.
10
Moon Phases
Phases in order: New moon, waxing crescent, 1st quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, waning crescent
11
Multiple Choice
Where would we find a full moon?
Near the sun
Far from the sun
12
Multiple Choice
Which way does the moon revolve?
Clockwise
Counter-clockwise

Competition
Organisms who eat the same food source will compete
In this food web the fox and owl will compete for the rabbits.
17
Plant competition
Plants will compete for things like sunlight, soil space, and water.
18
Insecticides and pesticides
These chemicals can cause a decrease in population to the organisms that eat plants.
Ex: Grasshoppers and butterflies can get sick and die from these chemicals.
19
Multiple Choice
Observe the image: The seagull will compete with who for the prawn?
Fish
zooplankton
Mussels
20
Multiple Choice
Observe the image: Which statement is true if the prawn population becomes extinct?
The fish population will increase
The seagulls will die off completely because they have nothing left to eat
The zooplankton population will increase while the fish population will decrease
21
Multiple Choice
Observe the image: how would this food web be effected if there was no sunlight?
Everything would remain the same
Plants would not survive, therefore the whole food web would be effected.
Some organisms would survive while others would not
