investigation 1.3 part 3- heavy and light

2
Remember that g, the acceleration of gravity on earth, is a constant
3
Poll
If I drop heavy ball and lighter ball at the same time, which will hit the ground first?
the heavy one
el pesado
the light one
el de la luz
they will land at the same time
aterrizarán al mismo tiempo
4
look at team meeting to see the ball drop.
5
look at team meeting to see the ball drop.
6
Remember the acceleration of gravity is the same for all objects on earth, regardless of size or weight.
7
A famous example fo the acceleration of gravity involves a hammer and a feather. I don't have a hammer and a feather, so will be using a heavy ball and a piece of paper.

Poll
what will happen if I drop a heavy ball and a piece of paper at the same time?
The ball will hit first
La pelota golpeará primero
The paper will hit first
papel llegará primero
They will hit at the same time
Golpearán al mismo tiempo
9
look at team meeting to see the ball drop.

What is the force that pulls the ball and the paper towards the Earth?
11
Remember that g is a constant, regardless of weight or mass of the object. We would expect both ball and paper to accelerate at the same constant rate. Something else is acting on the ball and paper besides the force of gravity. There is another force, another push or pull, that is acting on the ball and paper and causing the paper to fall more slowly.

What other force do you think could be acting on the feather?
13
The other force acting on the ball and paper is air resistance. Because of the shape of the surface of the ball, it moves through the air more easily than the paper. The paper is slowed much more than the ball. Its structure and surface texture mean that is interacts more with the air. But if we could remove all the air, they should fall at the same rate.

I'm going to show you a video of astronauts dropping a hammer and a feather at the same time on the moon from the moon landing in 1971. The feather is slowed much more here on earth than the hammer due to air resistance. There is no air resistance on the moon.
