Human Biotechnology
In this lesson, you will review how DNA technology is used to modify an organism's DNA.

2
Modern genetics uses DNA technology.
Changes in DNA can change an organism.
Random changes in DNA may introduce new traits into an organism.
Over time, certain traits may become more common in one group of organisms as they interact with the environment and each other.
3
Selective Breeding
The process of selecting and breeding parent organisms to pass on particular traits to the offspring.
Downfall- leads to lack of genetic variation
Example- crops, agriculture
4
Multiple Choice
Selective breeding is...
a process to create an organism with desired traits from parents with those desired traits
natural method of producing offspring with desired traits
creating a new species
making organisms reproduce during times of stress
5
Multiple Choice
An example of selective breeding is
a dog breeder mating 2 dogs to make more dogs
a farmer grows bees to pollinate the plants on his farm
a person pollinates 2 white rose plants to only create white roses
6
Multiple Choice
One problem with selective breeding is
creating a new species
gene variety is lost
extinction of a species
7
Genetic engineering
Used to introduce new traits into an organism
Produce medicines and other products
Identify individuals
Clone genes as well as organisms
Sequence the genome of an organism
8

Multiple Choice
What are genetically modified (GM) organisms and GM foods?
Foods or organisms with better taste
Foods or organisms grown in the USA, only
Foods or organisms with DNA modified in a way that doesn't occur naturally
Food and organisms that have been injected with hormones

Open Ended
What are some risks and benefits associated with using genetic engineering in food crops?

Poll
How do you rate your understanding of DNA technology to change an organism's genes?
I don't get it. I might need help.
I get some of it. I might need help.
I get it. I can do it by myself.
I've got it and I can teach it to a friend.
