What is a Frontier??

  • Frontier is the words that colonists used to describe the land on the edge of settlement. It is a place where people might not have been or settled.

  • Pioneers were people who moved to the frontier. Pioneers lead the way and are the first to settle in an area. Pioneers built houses and towns in what had only been forests

Daniel Boone

  • Daniel Boone was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania and will be known as one of the best pioneers in the frontier

  • He helped settle the state of Kentucky

Scotch-Irish Immigrants

  • Many of the pioneers on the Pennsylvania frontier were immigrants from Scotland and Ireland

  • Scotch- Irish immigrants came to Pennsylvania to seek a new and better life

Pioneer Living

  • Quite simply, pioneer living was extremely difficult

  • When first arriving, a pioneer family had to clear the land. This meant trees must be cut down and cleared

  • Once the land was cleared, corn had to be planted

  • Farmers only grew enough for the family to use... this was called subsistence farming
