In a PERSUASIVE TEXT, the author presents a CLAIM--a belief or position on a topic the author asks readers to accept

  • Authors should support each claim with FACTUAL EVIDENCE--statements that can be proven to be true. If readers identify a false statement, they conclude the argument is not reliable.

  • Authors should provide a SUFFICIENT (enough) facts to support each claim, and every fact should be RELEVANT to the issue.

  • FALLACIOUS REASONING (false logic) is a sign that an argument is unreliable. Pay close attention to author's GENERALIZATIONS--broad statements or inferences.
