Early Life
Born in New York City on January 1, 1919
Had one older sister.
Grew up in fashionable areas of Manhattan.
Graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy for High School in 1936.
Began writing fiction in high school often by the flashlight under his blanket.

Young Adult Life
Graduated from Columbia University in 1939, however, he disliked formal education.
Entered the military in 1942 and served until the end of World War 2 in 1945.
Upon returning home from the war, Salinger began publishing numerous short stories.
One of these short stories was "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" (1948).

Adult Life
Published "The Catcher in the Rye" in 1951.
Led a very reclusive life in later years.
Died on January 27, 2010
