Early Life

  • Born in New York City on January 1, 1919

  • Had one older sister.

  • Grew up in fashionable areas of Manhattan.

  • Graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy for High School in 1936.

  • Began writing fiction in high school often by the flashlight under his blanket.

Young Adult Life

  • Graduated from Columbia University in 1939, however, he disliked formal education.

  • Entered the military in 1942 and served until the end of World War 2 in 1945.

  • Upon returning home from the war, Salinger began publishing numerous short stories.

  • One of these short stories was "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" (1948).

  • Published "The Catcher in the Rye" in 1951.

  • Led a very reclusive life in later years.

  • Died on January 27, 2010
