Requests

  • Use Clear and Precise directions telling the student what to do

  • "Sam get out your math book."

  • "Cris, put your hands down."

Redirections

  • Prompt the student to stop a problematic behavior and then start an effective/prosocial behavior

  • “Tomas, stop touching Ryan, and keep your hands to yourself.”

  • “Tia, stop running and walk to the classroom."

Warnings

  • If a student does not follow a redirection, then provide a warning, indicating a consequences will follow if the behavior does not stop.

  • Hint, only warn of consequences that you can and will do

  • “Class, you need to stop calling out and signal to me when you need attention. If you do not use your signals, we will not have activity time today.”

Follow Through

  • If a student follows a direction at any point in the process... PRAISE the student

  • "Sam, good job putting your hands on your desk!"

  • If a student is unresponsive to a request, redirection, and warning, then follow through with the warned consequence

  • “Brian, because you did not stop talking to your neighbor, you are going to move to this seat

Tips for giving directions, redirections, and warnings

  • Be in close proximity of student(s) receiving directions/redirections (5 to 10 feet).

  • Get attention of student(s).

  • Use a calm business like tone

  • Allow up to 30 seconds for compliance before issuing additional redirection or a warning.

  • Praise for compliance immediately if direction is completed
