  • CECUM = where small intestine enter at ileocecal junction & have appendix.

  • ASCENDING COLON = retroperitoneal organ (locate more posteriorly). Right side of abdomen. Meets the liver, it turns 90 degrees to move horizontally. This turn is known as the hepatic flexure.

  • TRANSVERSE COLON = intraperitoneal organ (locate more anteriorly), center & upper part abdomen, extends to the spleen, where it turns another 90 degrees to point down. This turn is known as splenic flexure.

  • DESCENDING COLON = retroperitoneal organ (locate more posteriorly). Left side of abdomen. After the splenic flexure, the colon moves down towards the pelvis.

  • SIGMOID COLON = Intraperitoneal organ (locate more anteriorly). 40 cm. S-shape.

  • In about 40 cm long.

  • Located at left lower quadrant.

  • When the colon begins to turn medially, it becomes the sigmoid colon. Ended at the level of S3 and continue to rectum.

  • S-shape structure.
