  • The rectum is the most distal segment of the large intestine, and has an important role as a temporary store of feces.

  • The rectum begins at the level of the 3rd sacrum vertebra (S3).

  • From lateral view, rectum is marked by two major flexures: (i) Sacral flexure & (ii) Anorectal flexure

3

Lateral view (MALE)

  • 3 main organs directly located anterior to the rectum are:

  • SEMINAL VESICLE

  • PROSTATE GLAND

  • URINARY BLADDER

4

Lateral view (FEMALE)

  • 2 main organs directly located anterior to the rectum are:

Anorectal angle

  • The angle between the straight line of rectum axis & the straight line of anal canal axis is known as ANORECTAL ANGLE.
