Past perfect form

• We form past perfect with "had" + "past participle of the main verb"
  Examples: past perfect of be --> had been, past perfect of play --> had played and past perfect of think --> had thought

• Past participle of regular verbs --> add "ed" to the verb: 
  play --> played // jump --> jumped // walk --> walked

• Past participle of irregular verbs --> third column of the list of irregular verbs.

Past Perfect Uses

• We use past perfect for events that happened in the past (yesterday, last week, when I was a child, two years ago, etc.)

• Many times, we find past perfect and past simple in the same sentence, for example: "When I got home, my sister had gone."

• We use past perfect for the action that happens first (my sister had gone) and past simple for the action that happens later (I got home)

Already

Sometimes we stress the fact that an event happened first using "already".

Examples:

"I had already read the book when I saw the film."

"When Jane arrived at the party, her friends had already gone."

"I had already played football many times before I started playing with the school's team."
