Two types of nouns

  • countable (one apple, two apples)

  • uncountable (rice, water, pollution)

Countable nouns can be quantified by;

  • How many? How many cars do you have?

  • Too many . There were too many passengers in the lift.

  • A few. I have a few problems with my homework.

  • As many as . I ate as many cakes as my sister!

Uncountable nouns can be quantified by;

  • How much? How much traffic is there today?

  • Too much. There was too much luggage in the lift.

  • A little. I have a little pain in my shoulder.

  • As much as . I ate as much chocolate as my sister!

Quantifiers with both countable and uncountable

  • any - There isn't any tea left. Do you have any teabags?

  • a lot - I have a lot of money. I have a lot of problems with work.

  • all - Five cakes are too many. I can't eat all them. Only one bottle of coke! We'll drink it all quickly.

enough

  • before a noun - I have enough sugar, thank you.

  • after an adjective - My coffee is sweet enough.
