In this slideshow, you will learn:

  • Our NEW grading policy!

  • How assignments are graded.

  • When graded assignments will be due.

  • Which assignments are graded.

3

NEW Grading Policy

Great news! You will have FEWER graded assignments this semester than last semester.

Only 2 types of assignments will be graded:

Edpuzzles AND the Weekly Reflection.

What is an Edpuzzle and where do I find it?

An Edpuzzle is a video that asks you questions as you watch it.

You find the link to Edpuzzles in our stream on Google Classroom.

6

Edpuzzles are a GRADED assignment

  • Every Edpuzzle counts as 15 points on your grade.

  • To get the FULL 15 points, you must watch the entire video and answer ALL the questions as best you can.

  • You will have 1 graded Edpuzzle to watch EVERY class period that we meet online.

  • You will need to finish this Edpuzzle BEFORE we meet on Zoom during class time.

7

What are Weekly Reflections?

Weekly reflections are how you show me what you learned in our weekly investigation.

8

How do I do a weekly reflection?

  • Weekly reflections are worth 30 points and they are due no later than Friday at 3:30 pm.

  • You will have a choice EVERY week to demonstrate your knowledge for the weekly reflection.

  • You can demonstrate your knowledge by making a Flipgrid video, submitting a picture of a written piece of work and/or a diagram, or you can create a Storyboard that explains your knowledge.

  • I will go over ALL of these ways to complete a weekly reflection during Zoom class.

13

So...wait, does this mean other assignments are not graded?

Sweet! I don't have to do those assignments?!

Well. Not so fast...

14

EVERYTHING COUNTS!

This new grading policy is going to require a reset of how you THINK about classwork.

ALL classwork is important and your teacher will only assign something for you to do IF it is important for helping you complete the weekly reflection.

15

Nothing matters, if it doesn't lead to learning.

All too often, teachers assign work for points, but just finishing the work doesn't mean that you have actually LEARNED the material.

16

The ONLY way,

for me to know you have actually LEARNED something, is for you to teach it back to me. This is what the weekly reflection is...you choosing how you would like to present me with your knowledge of the material.

17

Our Weekly Class Schedule

  • On Monday, your textbook reading assignment for the week will be given. Your goal is to finish this reading on your own during the first 3 days of the week.

  • Tuesday or Wednesday class will be a guided explanation of the textbook reading on Zoom. You will start class with an Edpuzzle.

  • Thursday or Friday class will be an activity, lab or other experience which will help you in your investigation. You will start class with an Edpuzzle.

  • Throughout the week, you will work on your weekly reflection. It is due no later than 3:30 pm on Friday.

22

How do I DO the weekly reflection?

  • Every week, we will have a weekly investigation. The investigation is what we will be learning about. An investigation asks a question (not to be confused with the daily question which is for attendance only).

  • Think of all the things we do in class that week as part of the weekly investigation. For example...

  • Weekly Investigation Question: What makes up all living things?

  • Weekly Investigation: ALL the things you do in class that week. For example... Textbook reading assignments, Edpuzzles, Zoom meetings, home experiments, etc.

23

Weekly Reflection (using example)

Show in a FlipGrid video, in a short paper, in a drawing or in an animated Storyboard, that you can explain the answer to the weekly question, "What makes up all living things?"

24

Here is how your weekly reflection will be graded:

  • 30 points + 5 extra credit = You could teach this to someone else.

  • 30 points = You can clearly explain the answer to the weekly investigation.

  • 25 points = You explain some parts of the weekly investigation, but are missing some information.

  • 20 points = You make a close guess, but you need to learn more to explain it better.

  • 15 points = You can not explain any part of the investigation, but you submitted work.

  • 0 points = Nothing was submitted or it was turned in blank.

25

Here is another way to think about the grade scale:

  • 30 points + 5 extra credit = You can clearly and fully explain the answer to the investigation question and you could teach this to someone else.

  • 30 points = You can clearly and fully explain the answer to the investigation question.

  • 25 points = You can explain some parts of the investigation question, but other parts you still don't know.

  • 20 points = You made your best guess, but are not sure if you know the correct answer.

  • 15 points = You turned something in, but it didn't explain any part of the investigation question.

  • 0 points = You didn't turn anything in or you turned it in blank.

32

Well, that's enough NEW info for now.

I think you are going to really enjoy our new grading policy. It will be up to YOU to make sure you stay on top of your investigations by doing the textbook reading, watching the Edpuzzles and attending any Zoom meetings.

33

Remember...

ONLY Edpuzzles and Weekly Reflections are graded.

Everything else you do in class will help you to get a high score on your Weekly Reflections.

34

And don't forget...

You must turn in the QUESTION OF THE DAY to be marked present.

The QUESTION OF THE DAY is the ONLY thing used for attendance.

If you don't fill it out, you will be marked absent!

35

Multiple Choice

Nothing. Just attend Zoom meeting.

36

Poll

This is a poll (any answer is correct):

How do you think you will do with this new grading policy?

I like it! I think I will enjoy having less graded assignments to worry about.

I think it will help me learn the material and get a good grade.

I am still confused by it.

I don't like it. I like just having lots of busy work to turn in.
