The War of 1812

The War of 1812 was the second war between the United States and Great Britain. The United States won its independence in the first war—the American Revolution. Neither country won anything important in the War of 1812.

James Madison

In  1809 James Madison became the fourth President of the United States. Three years later, Americans were drawn into another war with Great Britain in 1812. This war is known as the War of 1812, or the “Second War for Independence”

Causes of the War of 1812

  • Britain and France wanted the U.S. to choose a side and stop commercial trading with the opposing country. 

    In an attempt to accomplish this, they would block American U.S. ships from trading.

Causes of the War of 1812

  • Britain began to impress (kidnap) U.S. Sailors and force them into their British Navy

  • Some British troops in Canada also encouraged Native American Indians to attack American settlements by supplying them with weapons.
