Some more rules...

  • #1) use a plural verb with subjects joined by and

  • ex: My friends and I are music lovers.

  • #2) Use a singular verb w/ singular subjects joined by or or nor.

  • ex: The piano or the harp is the prettiest is the prettiest instrument.

  • ex: Neither she nor he plays in the orchestra.

  • #3) Use a plural verb w/ plural subjects joined by or or nor.

  • ex: Neither violins nor flutes are common in a rock band.

  • #4) If a compound subject has BOTH singular and plural nouns joined by or or nor, use a verb that agrees with the noun closer to it.

  • ex: Neither kettledrums nor the xylophone is in the band.
