Comparison of two unlike things using the word like or as (or any other words used to compare objects/ideas)

Example: Susan's eyes were like sunshine on a rainy, gloomy day.

Susan's eyes are being compared to sunshine. These are two unlike items being compared using the word like to bridge the comparison.

Metaphor

A comparison of two unlike things not using comparing words (like, as).

Example: Education is your passport on your journey to employment.

Education is being compared to a passport- two things that would not typically be compared.

The rain came down in long knitting needles.
