Recap from yesterday

- Slope represents the steepness of a line
- To write the slope as a ratio, find 2 points on the line and calculate:

 change in ychange in x\frac{\text{change in y}}{\text{change in x}}  or  riserun\frac{\text{rise}}{\text{run}}
- From left to right: if the line goes up, the slope is positive
- From left to right: if the line goes down, the slope is negative

Does this line have a positive or negative slope?

1

Positive

2

Negative

Calculating Slope

  •  change in ychange in x=riserun\frac{\text{change in y}}{\text{change in x}}=\frac{\text{rise}}{\text{run}}

  • In this graph, to get from the left point to the right point we move up 4 units and right 5 units

  •  slope=45slope=\frac{4}{5}

41\frac{4}{1}

9

What is the slope?

  • What is the change in y (vertical change)?

  • Slope = 0

  • A horizontal line has no steepness or slant

Main Points

  • Slope is a number that describes the steepness of a line

  • Lines that are left-to-right inclining have a positive slope, and lines that are left-to-right declining have a negative slope

  • We can find the slope of a line by looking at the graph’s unit rate
