Perimeter
Perimeter is defined as the length of the boundary of any shape.
To find the perimeter, we just add the lengths of the sides along the boundary.
3
Example 1: The measurments of a swimming pool are given below. Pooja walked along the sides of the pool. How much distance has she walked ?
Measurements: all the lenghts=50m all the breadth=20m
Solution:
Distance walked by Pooja=Perimeter of the pool
=50m+20m+50m+20m=140m
Pooja walked 140m along the sides of the pool.
4
Perimeter of Simple Polygons
For polygons too, perimeter is the total length of all the sides.
Example 1: Find the perimeter of the given polygons.
a.Rectangle: All lengths=8cm All beadths=4cm b. Triangle: all sides=5cm
Solution:
a. The perimeter of the rectangle =8cm + 4cm + 8cm + 4cm
= 24cm
b. The perimeter of the triangle =5cm + 5cm + 5cm
= 5cm x 3 = 15cm
5
Perimeter of a Rectangle
In a rectangle, the opposite sides are equal. The length of the rectangle is shown as L and the breadth as shown as B. The perimeter of the rectangle = L + B + L + B, which two times the sum of L + B = 2 x ( L + B ).
6
Perimeter of a Squares
In a square, all sides are equal. The length of the sides of a square is represent as S. The perimeter of a square = S + S + S + S = 4 x s.
7
Examples
Example 1: Find the perimeter of a rectangle whose length is 4cm and breadth is 11cm.
Solution:
Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 x ( L + B )
= 2 x ( 4cm + 11cm )
= 2 x 15cm = 30cm
Example 2: Find the perimeter of a square whose side is 7cm.
Solution:
Perimeter of a square = 4 x s
= 4 x 7cm = 28cm
