Intro to Stage 4 of the CLC

verb 'person'

Slide image

2

In the first few stages of the course, we have only dealt with the '3rd person' i.e. he, she or it

  • canis cibum videt

  • The '-t' verb ending tells us that a he, she or it is performing the verb

  • The dog sees the food

Question image

Now your turn. What is the best translation of...

puer gladiatorem spectat

1

The girl sees the gladiator

2

The gladiator sees the girl

3

The boy watches the gladiator

4

The gladiator is watching the boy

4

puer gladiatorem spectat

  • The boy is the SUBJECT (=Nominative case)

  • The gladiator is the OBJECT (=Accusative case)

  • The verb 'spectat' ends with a '-t', confirming that we are dealing with a 'he' (can't be a 'she' or 'it' here, of course!)

Multiple Choice

Have another go...

amicum Quintus salutat

1

The friend greets Quintus

2

The friend is greeting Quintus

3

Quintus greets his friend

4

Quintus greeted his friend

6

In the sentence 'amicum Quintus salutat', did the word order trip you up?

  • Just because 'amicum' comes 1st here doesn't mean it's the SUBJECT

  • The '-um' ending tells you that he's the OBJECT, regardless where he is in the sentence.

In Stage 4, you will begin to meet 'I' and 'you' verb endings

  • video = I see

  • portas = you carry/ are carrying

  • These are the FIRST and SECOND person endings, respectively

cur tu canem portas?

1

You were carrying a dog

2

Why is he/ she/ it carrying a dog?

3

Why am I carrying a dog?

4

10

As you will see, we have also just met some new pronouns

  • ego means 'I'

  • tu means 'you'

  • We don't actually need them, though, because the VERB ENDINGS themselves tell us who is performing the verb.
