Learning Targets

  • I can recall the meaning of combining like terms and how to use the distributive property with 85% mastery.

  • I can follow SOAR norms and STAR expectations during virtual learning with 100% mastery.

8

Unpacking the Learning Target

I can recall (remember) the meaning of combining like terms (adding and subtracting similar variables/numbers) and how to use the distributive property (multiplying the number on the outside of parentheses to everything on the inside of parentheses) with 85% mastery.

9

Combining Like Terms

  • add or subtract terms that are "alike"

  • 15b + 5a + 21b

  • 15b + 21b both have the same variable, so we would add those terms together

  • 15b + 21b = 36b

  • then bring down 5a to finish your answer

  • final answer: 36b + 5a

10

Distributive Property

  • multiply the number on the outside of ( ) to everything on the inside of ( )

  • 6( a + 4)

  • (multiply 6 times a) + (multiply 6 times 4)

  • 6 times a= 6a

  • 6 times 4 = 24

  • final answer: 6a + 24
