Hartselle High, January 14, 2021

  • 9th graders will take a modified version of the ACT

  • 11th graders will take a practice ACT

  • On this test date, tests will be given on the computer rather than pencil/paper. You must bring your fully charged device with you.

3

General Information about the ACT:

  • The ACT has four sections, English, Math, Reading, and Science. These sections are always given in this same order.

  • There is an optional writing part that is offered last. (There will not be a writing test on the January 14 HHS mock test.)

  • The ACT is often used to help students gain entrance to college.

  • An excellent ACT score can help students earn scholarship money.

  • Raw scores (how many questions you answer correctly) is converted to a scaled score. The highest score possible is a 36.

4

This is for the 9th grade version of the test.

  • Each section is 10-25 minutes shorter than the standard ACT.

  • The order the test is given is the same as the standard ACT.

ACT Pacing

This is the test that the juniors will be taking.

All students need to be familiar with this format. 9th graders will have this format in the future for all standard ACT tests.

What to expect on this web-based ACT:

  • You need to bring your device, fully charged to school on test day.

  • Your test administrator will instruct you about timing, but your test will keep up with the time.

  • Your administrator may or may not give 5 minute warnings.

  • Your test administrator will have all directions for finding your test and will provide login and password information.

7

What to expect on this web-based ACT:

  • You may use the online calculator provided on the math section, but may bring your own calculator.

  • Bring your pencil. Scratch paper will be provided.

  • Once the test is started, there is no way to pause the test for a restroom break.

  • You will get helpful feedback from this mock test.

Hints and Tips for the

Math Portion of the ACT:

  • Timing is almost always a factor. Keep up with your time. You will always need to average one minute per math question. (Other subjects are different.)

  • Work through all questions that you know how to do first, then go back to problems that you need more time to complete.

  • The math section has 5 choices for each questions, but the other sections all have 4 choices.

  • Never leave an answer blank. Even if you guess, you have a 20% chance of getting it correct! (If you leave it blank...0%.)

16

Hints and Tips for the

Math Portion of the ACT continued:

  • Use a calculator that is familiar to you. If it is not solar, make sure it is charged up or has good batteries.

  • Learn math formulas in advance. Most math formulas that are needed are not provided.

  • The easier questions tend to come first and the more difficult questions at the end.

  • Don't get discouraged if you don't know how to work some problems. Watch your time and try to read every question!

17

Hints and Tips for the

Math Portion of the ACT continued:

  • Eliminate illogical answers.

  • Avoid falling for traps like "partial answers." Partial answers are answers that you need to find in order to then find the final answer. (Ask yourself: "Does this answer the question that was asked?')

  • Sometimes you will be given extra information that is not needed to solve the problem.

18

The directions for the written test are always the same! Since this test is online, they could differ slightly.

Directions: Solve each problem, choose the correct answer, then fill in the corresponding oval on your answer document. Do not linger over problems that take too much time. Solve as many as you can; then return to the others in the time you have left for the test.

You are permitted to use a calculator on this test. You may use your calculator for any problems you choose, but some of the problems may best be done without using a calculator.

19

Directions continued:

Note: Unless otherwise stated, all of the following should be assumed.

1. Illustrative figures are NOT necessarily drawn to scale.

2. Geometric figures lie in a plane.

3. The word line indicates a straight line.

4. The word average indicates arithmetic mean.

20

This is what you need to know about the directions:

  • Be familiar with the directions. You do NOT need to take time to read them once the test has started! You will need this time to work math problems!

  • It says that illustrative figures are NOT necessarily drawn to scale...but they really ARE DRAWN TO SCALE!

  • That means that if you don't know how to work a problem that has a diagram, make your guess based on the assumption that it is drawn to scale. (Trust me! I've looked at lots of ACT questions!)

21

Multiple Choice

On the math section of the ACT, the following is true about timing...

1

2

You have, on average, one minute per question.

3

You have, on average, one and a half minutes per question.

4

You have, on average, two minutes per question.
