6
Present perfect
All of the previous questions were ask using present perfect.
7
The present perfect is formed from the present tense of the verb have/has and the past participle of a verb.
8
We use the present perfect:
9
for something that started in the past and continues in the present:
They've been married for nearly fifty years. (They got married about 50 years ago)
She has lived in Liverpool all her life.(she lived in Liverpool all her life)
10
What's the difference?
A- They've been married for nearly fifty years.
B- They got about 50 years ago.
On A we are saying they're still married, on B we are simply saying they got married but not comfirming if they still married.
11
What's the difference?
A- She has lived in Liverpool all her life.
B- She lived in Liverpool all her life.
A is telling us she Lives in Liverpool, B is telling us she lived there but not confirming if she still does.
12
To make the positive present perfect tense, use:
'have' / 'has' + the past participle Make the past participle by adding 'ed' to regular verbs (for example, 'play' becomes 'played') There are a few verbs that change their spelling when you add 'ed' (for example, 'study' becomes 'studied')
13
Unfinished Actions
We use this tense when we want to talk about unfinished actions or states or habits that started in the past and continue to the present. Usually we use it to say 'how long' and we need 'since' or 'for'.
14
Example:
I've known Karen since 1994.
She's lived in London for three years.(notice the contraction "She's"=She has)
I've worked here for six months.
15
'Since' and 'For'
We use 'since' with a fixed time in the past (2004, April 23rd, last year). The fixed time can be another action, which is in the past simple (since I was at school, since I arrived).
16
example:
I've known Sam since 1992.
I've liked chocolate since I was a child.
She's been here since 2 pm.
17
We use 'for' with a period of time (2 hours, three years, six months).
I've known Julie for ten years.
I've been hungry for hours.
She's had a cold for a week.
18
