SLO 2.4: Proportionality, Ratios and the Scale Factor

The ratio of corresponding side lengths IS the scale factor in similar triangles

2

Cross Multiply to Solve Proportions

  • Set up your Side Length (SL) proportions:

  •  image SL 1preimage SL 1=image SL 2preimage SL 2\frac{image\ SL\ 1}{preimage\ SL\ 1}=\frac{image\ SL\ 2}{preimage\ SL\ 2}

  • Cross multiply and solve

3

Fill in the Blank

Solve this proportion (can you butterfly?)

 38=x24\frac{3}{8}=\frac{x}{24}

(Type just the number)

4

This Proportion IS the Scale Factor

  • Sometimes you can immediately recognize the scale factor and proportion the answer without cross-multiplying

  • In this example compare the denominators

  • 24 is 3 times as big as 8

     (k=3)\left(k=3\right)

  • Therefore x must by 3 times as big as 3

Fill in the Blank

Solve this proportion (can you butterfly?)

 57=25y\frac{5}{7}=\frac{25}{y}

(Type just the number)

6

Fill in the Blank

Solve this proportion (can you butterfly?)

 5t=t45\frac{5}{t}=\frac{t}{45}

(Type just the number)

1

 x=12.5; y=3.2; z=6x=12.5;\ y=3.2;\ z=6

2

 x=12; y=4; z=5x=12;\ y=4;\ z=5

3

 x=5; y=8; z=15x=5;\ y=8;\ z=15

Question image

Which of the following figures are similar to Figure X? (check all that apply)

1

a. (9/12/15)

2

b. (15/80/100)

3

c. (3/4/9)

4

d. (10.5/14/17.5)

Pythagorean Triplets

  • Tie 12 evenly spaced knots into a rope to guarantee your corner is a right angle

  •  32+42=523^2+4^2=5^2

  • Apply any scale factor  k=10; k=3.5k=10;\ k=3.5

  • There are lots of Pythagorean Triplets but 3-4-5 is the most common by far  (51213); (81517); (72425)\left(5\cdot12\cdot13\right);\ \left(8\cdot15\cdot17\right);\ \left(7\cdot24\cdot25\right)

Question image

For this problem you are given that AB\overline{AB}  is parallel to DE\overline{DE} and asked to find the length of  CD\overline{CD}  .  Without knowing that those two lines are parallel you could NOT solve this problem because you are NOT given that the two triangles are similar.  How can you prove the two triangles are similar?

Question image

To estimate the height of her school’s gym, Nicole sights the top of the gym wall in a mirror that she has placed on the ground. The mirror is 3.6 meters from the base of the gym wall. Nicole is standing 0.5 meter from the mirror, and her height is about 1.8 meters. What is the height of the gym wall? (Type in only the number to 2 decimal places).

Missing Information

  • Two triangles can be proven similar by:

  • AA or AAA (same thing)

  • SAS (two sides proportional, one congruent angle)

  • SSS (all sides proportional)

  • What information is missing from the last slide (mirror problem)? You can't prove these triangles similar unless you know...
