Grammar: the present perfect with how long, for and since

We use the present perfect to talk about something that started in the past and continues into the present.

FOR:

Use the present perfect with FOR to talk about a period of time.

I have studied English for six years.

We have lived in Berlin for three months

SINCE:

Use the present perfect with SINCE to talk about points in time or when something began.

I have studied English since 2015.

We've lived in Berlin since June.

We use HOW LONG...? to ask about the duration of a state or activity.

A: How long have you been ill?

B: Since yesterday.
