Multiple Choice

One night at dinner, three-year-old Cheyenne's parents saw her put her napkin in her lap, even though they had never verbally instructed her to do so. They realized that she had probably learned by observing and imitating their own behavior at the dinner table each night. Cheyenne seems to have learned to put her napkin in her lap through a process called

1

mirroring

2

antisocial behavior

3

modeling

4

insight learning

5

positive reinforcement

5

Why does modeling work?

  • By watching models, we experience vicarious reinforcement or vicarious punishment

  • Mirror neurons may provide a neural basis by firing when we observe others doing certain actions

6

7

Models can have good and bad effects

  • Modeling of prosocial behavior (positive, constructive, helpful) can have prosocial effects

  • Observational learning can also have antisocial effects (Media violence? Abusive parenting?)
