1

a system including: mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, and neptune

2

This is known as the Nebular Hypothesis

5

Solar System Formation Pt. 1

  • A nebula or a spinning cloud of dust made of mostly light elements flattened into a protoplanetary disk

  • The spinning nebula gained the majority of material in its center.

  • This is why the sun Accounts for over 99% of the mass in our solar system

Slide image

6

Solar System Formation Pt. 2

  • The rest of the mass (1%) is then floating around our new sun

  • Bits of this material clump together due to gravity.

  • Large clumps of matter in orbiting the sun or a star were called protoplanets, which will develop into a planet.

Poll

A shooting star is a __________

comet

asteroid

meteor

10

Meteoroid

Comets leave trails of gas and dust behind them.

The trailing dust becomes meteors, and as these crash into the thin air of the Earth's atmosphere the dust burns up.

These bright streaks of light across the night sky are known as shooting stars

How do we know all this?!?!

  • Telescopes on Earth

  • Space probes

  • Hubble Space Telescopes

  • Rover expeditions

  • These all allowed us to go where humans can't to gather information and take samples and learn new information!
