7
Learning Objectives
Define what homeostasis is
Give examples of conditions we need to keep the same
Describing the structure of the nervous system
8
Open Ended
What do you think the word 'homeostasis' means? What words can you think of associated with it?
9
Conditions Inside
Human beings live everywhere from the equator to the Antarctic
People survive wearing no clothes or lots of clothes, running a marathon or sitting in front of a computer screen
Conditions can change dramatically around us and inside us yet we survive – how?
Our bodies respond to the changing environment!
10
Homeostasis
Homeostasis – the control of a constant environment in the body
In order for our bodies to work correctly, the conditions inside must be kept the same
Enzymes only work at their best in specific conditions of temperature and pH
Enzymes control all the functions of a cell – so for survival of tissues, organs and organisms the conditions must be perfect
11
What things do we need to keep the same in our bodies?
12
Open Ended
What do we need to kee the same in our bodies?
13
Keeping things the same...
Temperature
Water
Sugar (glucose)
Salts
Carbon dioxide
Oxygen
14
Multiple Choice
Homeostasis is...
staying the same
the control of a constant environment in the body
staying at home
the control of the constant environment outside the body
15
Nervous System
Your nervous system is made up of:
Brain
Spinal cord - these make up the Central Nervous System (CNS)
Nerves (made of nerve cells called neurones)
16
This is what your nervous system actually looks like!
17
Active Reading
The nervous system enables humans to react to their surroundings and to coordinate their behaviour.
A stimulus is any change in the surroundings. These are detected by receptors (cells that detect a change) and information passes along cells (neurones) as electrical impulses to the central nervous system (CNS).
The CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord.
The CNS coordinates the response of effectors which may be muscles contracting or glands secreting hormones.
18
Multiple Choice
What are the parts of the CNS?
Brain
Brain, spinal cord and nerves
Nerves and spinal cord
