Task 3

  • Produce a written report comparing both the physical and chemical properties of the following functional groups in biological molecules, and explain their similarities and differences

    ·        Ethanol

    ·        Ethanoic acid

    ·        Ethylamine

5

What to include

  • Choose 3 physical properties

  • Chemical properties - reactivity

6

CLEAR COMPARISON!

  • X has a higher boiling point than Y & Z because of

  • Rather than

  • X has a boiling point of 10. Y has a boiling point of 5.

Task 5

  • Produce a written report on both feline and rabbit nutrition which assesses the effects of having a deficiency or excess in the following nutritional biological molecules:

    ·        Carbohydrates

    ·        Fibre

    ·        Lipids

    ·        Proteins & amino acids

    ·        Vitamins & Minerals

    ·        Water

9

We are looking at what happens if there is too much or too little of a nutrient in the body

Rather than how did the animal consume an excess or not enough of a nutrient

10

Be concise!

  • You only have 1 side of A4 per animal and 7 nutrients to cover

  • Use feedback from the water task

  • Link to the animals diet where possible

  • i.e. felines may naturally consume an excess of protein, whereas with rabbits this is possibly linked to poor husbandry or disease

11

Take advantage!

  • You can submit 1 more paragraph of this task for feedback

  • Deadline - Friday 22nd.

12

Task 6

  • Produce a scientific summary evaluating the nutritional importance of the biological molecules in both cats and rabbits.

    Things to consider are:

Ø The links between the structure of the biological molecules and how they interact with the body of each animal.

Ø How important/necessary are the biological molecule to each animal.

Ø How each of the animal uses the biological molecule to maintain normal functioning.

13

Ø How each of the animal uses the biological molecule to maintain normal functioning.

  • Apply the function of each to its function!

  • Proteins are used to create hormones - hormones are required for normal functioning!

14

Ø The links between the structure of the biological molecules and how they interact with the body of each animal.

  • How do monosaccharides interact with the body? ENERGY! Polysaccharides? STORAGE ENERGY!

  • How do phospholipids interact with the body? CELL STRUCTURE

15

Ø How important/necessary are the biological molecule to each animal.

How important is fibre to a rabbit?

How important is protein to a cat?

Does either species have any amino acids their body cannot synthesise?
