Migration to Lagos
The British colonised Lagos in 1861, making it a centre for trade.
Merchants were attracted to the area, the then capital city.
When slavery was abolished many slaves returned to Lagos.
After independance in 1961 the government funded construction of sea ports, oil refineries and factories, creating many jobs.
War and poverty occurred in neighboring countries.
