Strategies

Drama

14

The first thing is to make sure you identified the passage as a drama.

You can do that by searching for the elements of drama we went over earlier. ( If it has cast of characters, Stage directions, scenes, acts, and others)

15

Multiple Choice

Which of these best helps the reader identify the type of passage?

1

Long passage

2

the setting of the passage

3

4

The Lesson of the play

Each play has a lesson. At he end of the play, what was learned? Ask yourself.......Did somebody learn something at the end of the play.

Examples: At the beginning of the story, the main character wanted to give up on something but at the end he/she learns that trying hard can make him/her be successful.

At the beginning of the story, the main character was getting bad grades on his spelling test, but at the end he/she learns that if he/she studies hard, he/she can get a good grade.

17

Multiple Choice

Why does the playwright include a narrator in the plays?

Playwright is the person who wrote the script (play).

1

To help the audience understand what the characters are thinking

2

To give the audience details about the characters’ actions in the scene

3

To make the main character’s conflict seem more suspenseful

4

To assist the main characters in figuring out how to solve a problem

18

Dictionary Use

You MUST use a dictionary for any word you do not know in the QUESTION and write the definition next to it.

You will get the question WRONG if you don't even have an idea what it is asking you....

Use a dictionary for any word you do not understand in the play as well so that you understand the story better.

19

The Setting & Time

Look for the setting & Time and write it down.

Sometimes it is found at the very beginning and other times you have to read the play to figure it out. Look for clues to find out the time.

If they say sunny, it will be in the day

If they mention that it is dark or it is 8pm then it will be at night.

If they are talking about breakfast, then it will be morning.

Dinner= at night

LOOK FOR CLUES!

20

make connections

sometimes you have to think of what you already know or remember in the past to find your answers.

Example: If the question asks you how was the character feeling in the morning but it only tells you that at night he couldn't sleep because his stomach hurts. Then you know that he probably feels bad, sleepy, and sick because it may have happened to you before or someone else.
