The Imperative!

The imperative is used to express a command, instruction, rules, duties, warning or advices.

To make the imperative

  • Use the infinitive of the verb without "To" such as: "Come here!", "Stand up!", "Sit down!", "Open your books" or "Do your homework".

To make a negative imperative

  • Put "Do not" before the verb, for example: "Do not come here!"

  • To give direct order such as: "Stand up straight" or "don't touch your face"

  • To give instructions such as: "Open your books"

  • On Sign and Notices such as: "Push", "Don't use" or "Stop"

  • To give a friendly and formal advice such as: "Tell him how you feel"
