He later finds that a company is using his music in advert, which he was not asked about.


Is this a copyright issue? Explain your answer.

Answer

Yes it is because the company did not ask permission first. By using the song without asking they are in breach of copyright.

Janelle writes a short story. She uploads the story to social media and says that other people are allowed to take the story and make it longer.

She later sees that other people are posting their versions of her original story.

Bill is thinking about creating a new website about cricket. He draws up some sketches of the website about will look like and decides to make it another time.

Sam releases his own cricket website which looks similar to Bill's designs, but is not exactly the same.


Is this a copyright issue? Explain your answer.

Answer

No. Firstly Bill never finished his site and so there is no copyright for it, only the designs. But if Sam's site is not exactly the same there is no evidence that he copied Bill.

Kamrun finds a picture on the Internet. The picture is on a site that hosts the works of various artists to advertise their pieces.

He really likes the picture and uses it as the background of a poster he is making.


Is this a copyright issue? Explain your answer.

Answer

Yes. As he has not gained the artists permission he is in breach of copyright by using it for his own purposes. He also needs to give the artist credit for the picture.
