Math Antics: The Distributive Property

3

What is the distributive property?

  • "To “distribute” means to divide something or give a share or part of something.

According to the distributive property, multiplying the sum of two or more addends by a number will give the same result as multiplying each addend individually by the number and then adding the products together."

4

The Distributive Property Uses Parentheses

-Remember a number or letter right next to parentheses means to MULTIPLY. In this case you come up with the same answer both ways.

5

Use of Variables:

  • Many times, problems using the distributive property use variables

6

Multiple Choice

Solve: x(5 + 2)

1

5x + 2

2

5x + 2x

7

Variables x Variables

  • Ex.) a(a-2)

  • a multiplied times a equals a2

  • The final answer is: a2-2a

  • We add an exponent for every time we multiply a

  • ex.) a(a2 -2)= a3-2a2

8

Multiple Choice

What is y(2 +y)

1

2y + y2

2

2y + y

9

Negative Numbers/Variables

  • Negative numbers x positive numbers are always negative. Negative numbers are variables include anything with the subtraction symbol in front of it. ex.) 2(5x-2)= 10x -4

  • Negative Numbers/Variables x Negative Numbers/Variables are always POSITIVE (again incluces subtraction sign). ex.) -2(5x -2)= -10x + 4
