Action Verbs: Notice the underlined verbs that show action.

  • The bird soared above us.

  • The tomato exploded on the ground.

  • Mrs. Macher danced across the classroom.

Linking Verb: Remember that LINKING VERBS are special verbs that link! They link to rename the subject or describe the subject. They ARE NOT actions. 

  • Forms of BE: am, is, was, were, be

  • USE to LINK not as Action: taste, smell, look, feel, appear, grew

  • Others: become, remain, sound

Linking Verb: LINKING VERBS are special verbs that link the subject to an adjective that describes. They ARE NOT actions.

  • She is happy. (She is linked to the adjective happy.)

  • The pie tastes delicious. (The pie is not tasting! Tastes is not an action verb. The pie is being linked to the adjective delicious using the linking verb, tastes.)

  • The crowd grew quiet. (The crowd didn't grow! They became quiet. So...the linking verb grew links the subject "crowd" to the adjective "quiet".

Linking Verb: These examples link the subject to a noun that renames the subject.

  • Anya is a writer.

  • Thanush is the captain.

  • Spongebob is a character.

Helping Verbs! Remember, they work as helpers to a main verb so they work as a team! 

  • am, is, was, were, being, been, been, be

  • do, does, did

  • shall, will, could, should, would, may, might, must , can

Helping Verbs Examples: The helping verb helps the main verb.

  • I am cooking the food.

  • She should study for the test.

  • Samantha will come to the party.
