Gr.3 M5 L16
Objective: Place whole number fractions and fractions between whole numbers on the number line.
2
Multiple Choice
Mario is trying to figure out what fraction of the number line he is currently above. Which fraction do you think it is?
1/4
0/4
1/5
4/4
0/5
3
In order to understand the fraction of the number line Mario is currently above, we have to know a few things.
4
First, WHOLE NUMBERS. A whole number represent a whole and is any number starting from 0 that has no fractional or decimal part.
5
Multiple Select
Select only the WHOLE NUMBERS?
1/4
5
7
9.87
4/9
6
We also have to understand that on a number line the denominator (the number below in a fraction) represents the total amount of equal parts (jumps) between 2 whole numbers
7

8
With the denominator identified, we can now focus on the numerator. The numerator represents the amount of jumps (equal parts) taken or passed to get to that current point.
9
Though it may seem that Mario has not taken any jumps to get above the 1, remember that a line continues forever both ways and that whole numbers start at 0. So lets zoom out to see how far Mario has actually already traveled.

12
Since the denominator represents the total amount of equal parts in a whole, and the whole number represents the amount of wholes, you can multiply the denominator to the whole number to find the numerator as well.

Open Ended
Now take a look at this number line. What do you notice?
16
I noticed the fractional units are thirds, the end points are 4 and 7. Some whole numbers are missing.
17
Multiple Choice
What are the missing whole numbers?
6,7
5,6
5
2,3
18
Let's equally space 2 tick marks for the two missing numbers.
19
The fractional units are thirds, so each whole needs to be partitioned into three equal parts. Now we can label the fractions.
20
Fill in the Blanks
Type answer...
21
Now we can continue to add a third as we go across the tick marks.
22
Multiple Choice
Which fraction belongs at this tick mark?
1/3
