Have short branched carbohydrate chains act as antigens which are recognised by other cells.

Simply to say

Our body has the ability to distinguish our own cells from those cells that are not belong to our body cells.

Glycoprotein acts as a marker for the cell so our body knows that this cell is our body cell and not enemy. Example: bacteria, virus, pollen.

And in other words...

It is impossible for two people having the same glycoprotein contents except identical twins.

The immune system will not respond to 'self cell' but react with those cells are 'non-self'.
