Before we look at present perfect subjunctive, let's check in about the subjunctive one more time.

What 3 steps do we use to conjugate a verb in el subjuntivo?

5

To conjugate a verb in el subjuntivo...

  • Step 1: Conjugate the verb in the yo form

  • Step 2: Take off the -o*

  • Step 3: Put on the opposite ending for the person(s) you're talking about

  • Ejemplo: Tú + dibujar --> dibujo --> dibuj --> dibuj + es = dibujes

  • *Watch out for verbs where you can't just take off the "-o". These verbs are IRREGULAR.

6

Multiple Choice

Remember, we know the present tense conjugations of "haber" from using present perfect. Think about the "yo" form specifically.

Question: Will the present subjunctive conjugations of haber be regular or irregular?

1

Regular

2

Irregular

7

¿Cuándo usamos el subjuntivo?

  • In general, we need to use subjunctive when something isn't 100% certain

  • In sentences, we use subjunctive in the dependent clause (the part after the "que") when the main/independent clase talks about...

  • Wishes/Desires (Espero que...)

  • Impersonal Phrases (Es bueno que...)

  • Doubt/Denial (Dudo que...)

  • Ojalá (Ojalá que...)

8

¿Cuándo usamos el subjuntivo?

  • Today, we're only going to focus on subjunctive with verbs that talk about:

  • 1. Hope/Desire/Want

  • 2. Doubt

9

Verbs that relate to Wishes & Desires

  • 1. Esperar que + subjunctive (to hope/wish that...)

  • 2. Desear que + subjunctive (to desire that...)

Slide image

10

2 Subjects = Subjunctive

  • IMPORTANTE: We almost always need 2 different subjects in order to use subjunctive (different people on each side of the "que")

  • Ejemplo: esperas que ella VAYA a prom contigo.

Present Perfect Subjunctive

  • The present perfect tense you already know technically has a longer name: Present Perfect Indicative

  • Present Perfect Subjunctive will follow the same rules as Present Perfect Indicative: use it for something that has happened or what people have done

  • The difference: We use the subjunctive version of present perfect when our main/independent clause has a verb/phrase that causes subjunctive

  • Example 1: She has done the homework. Ella ha hecho la tarea.

  • Example 2: I hope that she has done the homework. Espero que ella haya hecho la tarea.

35

Haber: Present Subjunctive Conjugations (when in doubt, remember your "vaya" conjugations)
