What is imagery?

Imagery is writing in the text that includes figurative and metaphorical language to improve the reader's experience through their senses.

This type of imagery appeals to what you see. For example, the bright orange and dark red sunset was the most beautiful one they’d ever seen.

Touch

This type of imagery appeals to what you can feel. For example, the cat’s fluffy fur was so soft it felt like butter.

This type of imagery appeals to what you can smell. For example, the stench of the raw onions was so strong that she needed to leave the room.

This type of imagery appeals to your hearing. For example, the boom and crash of thunder and lightning shook the house.

This type of imagery appeals to your taste. For example, the flavorful, buttery, cheese pasta was so delicious she went for seconds.

Authors use imagery to appeal to your 5 senses. They do this in order to create emotion. Imagery can give you a better understanding of the story, plot, or characters and can make you feel more connected.
