Lets Practice!

Step by Step

  • 1. Label the points

  • (It doesn't matter which point you pick to be first or second you'll still get the same answer)

7

Lets Practice!

Step by Step

  • 2. Substitute or plug in the numbers into the slope formula

  • 3. Use the formula to calculate the slope and simplify

Your Turn!

Find the slope of the line that goes through points (5, 17) and (0, -3)

Step 1: Label the points

  • First point ---> (x1 , y1) = (5, 17) x1= 5 and y1= 17

  • Second point ---> (x2 , y2) = (0, -3) x2= 0 and y2= -3

Step 2: Substitute or plug in the numbers (values) into the slope formula

 m=y2y1x2x1m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}

 m=31705m=\frac{-3-17}{0-5}

- Remember y values go on top and x values go on bottom

- Don't forget the MINUS in between each point for the top and bottom

11

Step 3: Calculate the slope and simplify

 m=31705=205=4m=\frac{-3-17}{0-5}=\frac{-20}{-5}=4

- Use a calculator if you need to!
- The line that separates the 2 numbers in a fraction is a division sign
- When you multiply OR divide 2 negative numbers with each other you will get a positive answer
