15

Human Fertilisation

To put it simply, it's an 'egg and sperm race'!

Slide image

16

Keywords

Fertilisation occurs when a male gamete joins with a female gamete

Each carry a range of DNA (genetic material) from the parent

A different sperm cell would give a baby with different characteristics

A zygote is the name for a fertilised egg cell

Slide image

17

Fertilisation: Step 1

Every month a woman releases an egg from her ovary

That egg travels down the oviduct

Slide image

18

Fertilisation: Step 2

If sperm has been released into the vagina, it will start to swim up through the cervix and uterus and up to the oviduct

Lots of sperm cells are released because most of them will die or go the wrong way!

Slide image

19

Fertilisation: Step 3

The sperm cells will race to be the first one to get to the egg in the oviduct

Slide image

20

Fertilisation: Step 4

They will race to be the first one to digest the protective jelly coating around the egg and get to the nucleus

Only one sperm cell will be able to fertilise an egg!

Slide image

21

Fertilisation: Step 5

The fertilised egg will travel down into the uterus and implant in the lining of the uterus

This lining is full of blood vessels to give the growing zygote lots of nutrients

Slide image

22

Fertilisation: Step 6

The cells will divide very quickly...

Slide image

23

Fertilisation: Step 7

...and soon develop into a baby!
