Place value lesson

2
Our number system
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
with these ten numbers we can make any number imaginable, we just need to use place values. 284 is small but if there were six zeros behind it, it becomes 284,000,000 which is a whole lot more!!!
3
By using place value we went from 284 dollars to 284 million dollars.
4
When we write numbers, we write them right to left. When we read them we read them left to right. This image is a chart of place value names. In 284,000,000 we take up every one of these place values.
5
what a number "looks like"
1 thousand is a big cube
1 hundred is flat square
10 is a line of individual squares all connected
1 is a single square
So, for 284, we need 2 flat squares, 8 lines of ten, and 4 individual squares.
