Gustar - To Please
(Expressing likes & dislikes)

2
IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT GUSTAR!!!
It does NOT mean "to like" - REMEMBER THIS!
It means "to please" - THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT HOW TO CONJUGATE IT!
You say "It pleases me" to say "I like" in Spanish.
You DON'T conjugate gustar in the yo form to say "it pleases me" NO!!!!!!!!!! DON'T DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!
You conjugate it in the he/she/it form - gusta - because "it pleases."
You put "me" (pronounced "may") in front to say "it pleases ME."
Me (me) gusta (it pleases) + the thing/activity that you like.
3
Multiple Choice
Cierto (true) o Falso? - Gustar = to like
Cierto
Falso
4
It means "TO PLEASE."
You say "it PLEASES me" not "I like it." in Spanish.
5
Me gusta... (it pleases me)
You put what you like AFTER me gusta in Spanish. So, you're saying "it pleases me to sing," or "it pleases me to listen to the radio," or if it's a noun, you say "it pleases me the libarary"... sounds a bit weird in English, but perfectly AWESOME in Spanish!
6
Here are those examples:
Me gusta cantar. (It pleases me to sing.)
Me gusta escuchar la radio. (It pleases me to listen to the radio.)
Me gusta la biblioteca. (It pleases me the library.)
7
Multiple Choice
Which one of these says "it pleases me?" (The way we say "I like" in Spanish)
Yo gusto
Gusta me
Gusto me
Me gusta
8
Multiple Choice
Where does the thing you like go in the sentence?
After "me gusta"
Before "me gusta"
Between "me" and "gusta"
After "yo"
9
DON'T USE YO!!!!
You're not doing the action! The thing you like is "pleasing" - that's why the verb gustar is conjugated as "gusta" because you're saying "it pleases" and "it" uses the same conjugation as he/she (just like it does in English!) So, you DON'T SAY "I" or "Yo" at all. Use "Me" to show that the thing is pleasing to you, (It pleases ME....)
10
Multiple Choice
How would you say "I like Chocolate" in Spanish (remember...it pleases me!)
Yo me gusto el chocolate
Me gusta el chocolate
Yo gusto el chocolate
Me el chocolate gusta
11
Multiple Choice
What does "Me gusta caminar" mean in English?
I walk a lot.
It's hard to walk.
It pleases me (I like) to walk
He/She wants to walk with me.
12
Remember that you conjugate Gustar in the he/she/it form to say "it pleases"
Me GUSTA dibujar (it pleases me to draw)
Me GUSTA descansar (it pleases me to rest)
Me GUSTA la clase (it pleases me the class/the class pleases me)
To draw, to rest & the class are the "it" that you're talking about.
The verb or the single thing is the "it" that pleases.
13
To say "It pleases you" (also know as "You like" in English)
The only change is "me" turns into "te"
Te = you/to you
So you're saying "it pleases YOU" or "It's pleasing to you"
Everything else acts exactly the same!
14
More examples:
Te gusta cantar - It pleases you to sing.
Te gusta escuchar la radio - it pleases you to listen to the radio.
Te gusta la biblioteca - The library pleases you.
15
Multiple Choice
What's the one thing you change to make it say "it pleases YOU" (or "You like")
Put Gustar in the "tú" form - "gustas"
Change the "Me" to "Tú"
Just take off the "me"
Change "Me" to "Te"
16
ALWAYS REMEMBER AND NEVER FORGET...
The "do/does" of a question in Spanish is just the question marks!
So, "It pleases you" and "Does it please you?" (AKA: "Do you like?") are written exactly the same, but the question has question marks!
17
See? Samesies...
"Te gusta el helado" (the ice cream pleases you") doesn't change
The question marks just went away!
18
Multiple Choice
Which one of these says "Does it please you to travel?" (AKA: Do you like to travel?)
Te gusta viajar.
¿Te gusta viajar?
¿Tu gustas viajar?
¿Gustas viajar?
19
Why don't we conjugate the 2nd verb?
Because..."When two verbs go walking, the first one does the talking!"
Gusta is already conjugated (it's "doing the talking" because it's the first verb)
So you leave the 2nd verb in the infinitive (unconjugated) form.
It pleases (conjugated) me ... TO walk (not conjugated):
Me gusta (conjugated - "1st verb does the talking") caminar (not conjugated)
20
When two verbs go walking...
The FIRST one does the talking:
CONJUGATE the first verb...
"Gusta" is conjugated in the he/she/it form to say "it pleases me"
21
LEAVE the 2nd one alone!
It stays unconjugated - or in its "infinitive" form.
Me gusta dibujar.
It pleases me to draw.
(Because you can't say "It pleases me I draw." That doesn't work - so you don't conjugate "to draw.")
22
