Today, we will learn how the author gathered historical information to write the story. Then we will describe the historical events that are connected to the story.

Look
at pages 132 through 135 in the Text Collection. Notice the
photographs, time lines, and articles. These are text features that
tell us that this section of the text is informational. The purpose
of this section is to give background information about the
characters and historical events in Marching with Aunt Susan.

Why did the author decide to write about women’s suffrage?
6
Why did the author decide to write about women’s suffrage?
The
author was fascinated with the struggle for American women’s
suffrage and had never read about the subject in college history.
So she set out to learn all she could about the topic with a goal
of finding a real girl to write about.

Let’s think about the sequence of connected historical events that happened in the California suffrage campaign described in the text feature on page 133. I see Susan B. Anthony traveled around the state to speak. I’ll write, “Aunt Susan speaks across California” in the first Events box

Making Historical Connections
I want to find an
event listed on the right side of the time line that had an effect on Teddy Roosevelt. I’m going to choose the 1865 event, the end of the Civil War.
31
Making Historical Connections
In my writing, I’m going to focus on how Teddy’s
father’s decision to stay out of the war influenced Teddy’s life. I’m going to write about how this decision led to Teddy’s own decision to fight in the war against Spain.
32
My example:
Teddy Roosevelt was born a little bit before the Civil War ended, according to the time line.
Teddy’s father decided not to fight in the Civil War because it would hurt his wife, who was a southerner. Teddy felt bad about this.
He thought fighting for one’s country was a duty. Because of this, Teddy was influenced later in life to fight in the war against Spain with the Rough Riders volunteer army he formed. In this way he could make up for his father not fighting in the Civil War and bring honor to his family.
