Lesson 4 - Suffixes

Suffixes

A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to form a new word. the meaning of the new word is usually different from that of the original word.

Examples:

• a. Socrates was a famous philosopher and thinker.

• b. John can run faster than any boy in the school.

• c. Many Indians have died fighting for the freedom of their country.

• d. Seeing the cheerful faces of the children in the morning made the teacher happy.

• e. The kingdom of the great king was divided into smaller regions, each ruled by a governor.

• f. The sky is clouder and it promises to be a bright and sunny day.

• In a, thinker = think + er

• In b, faster = fast + er

• In c, freedom = free + dom

• In d, cheerful = cheer + ful, teacher = teach + er

• In e, kingdom = king + dom

• In d, clouder = cloud + er
